What iPhone Do I have? How To Identify the Model Name And Number
Estimated reading time: 5 minutes
There have been a great number of iPhone models released since the original in 2007. Therefore it can be confusing to identify the model name and number, especially if it’s been a while since you used it. What iPhone do I have is a question we’re often asked so here’s a quick guide to finding that out.
How do I tell which iPhone model I have?
Each model of iPhone has its own “A” number. This helps not only identify the iPhone range e.g. iPhone X, but also the sub models within each iteration, like iPhone XS or iPhone XR.
The “A” number was pretty easy to locate up to the iPhone 8. On these earlier iPhone models it was etched in to the back case of the phone so it was clearly readable. However, since then you have to locate it in the “Settings” menu.
How to find the “A” model number on iPhone 7 and earlier
The model number on iPhone 7 and earlier is located towards the bottom of the back case. Just look for the small print after the “Designed By Apple In California” wording. You’ll see a four digit number e.g. A1586.

Once you have the “A” number you can match it to the list in our table below. In this way it’ll help you quickly identify what iPhone you have. You can then subsequently look for the prices of repair parts or how much it’s worth if you want to sell it.

Where to find the “A” model number on iPhone 8 and newer handsets
Locating your iPhone model is equally easy. Just open the “Settings” app and find the “General” menu. Next, scroll down to find the “About” option.
In this section you will see the model name for your iPhone and a number that starts with an “M” or an “N” followed by a series of numbers and letters.

You now already have your iPhone model name. However if you tap on the “M” or “N” number, you will see a number starting with the letter “A” and followed by 4 digits e.g. A2628. So, now you not only have the iPhone model name, but also the model number.

The “A” number tells you which iPhone model you have. You can also use this number to get the iPhone model from our list below.
